About Singapore Scouter

I joined Scouting way back in 1992, and progressed through the Venture Scout (1996) and Rover Scout (1998) Sections of Dunman High Crane Scout Group, one of the established Scout Groups in Singapore.

During a recent conversation with the 2014 PSA Awardees from my Scout Group, it occurred to me that in those days, we really did Scouting all time as our weekday afternoons would be commonly spent with our patrols learning knots in some form or having physical training of some sort.  This did not end when we became Venture Scouts, as we could be found back at the DHS campus very often even though we were now attending junior colleges elsewhere.

I believe that Scouting is a great constructive activity which complements that which is learnt in the classroom.  It unlocks many doors.  I believe it has taught me self-reliance and independence.  Traits that have borne me in good stead as I faced the challenges of life.  Even though it could not have taught me everything required, it gave me one important skill and that is the ability to learn, adapt, survive and eventually thrive.

  1. How about writing on the advent of Girl Scouting in Singapore? In the wake of the girls winning the prestigious award. I’ve also seen Girl Scouts in Dunman Sec. Quite interested to see how that goes and is it replacing Girl Guides? Given a choice, it’ll be hard for me to say which I’d prefer.
